Back to School Bash rounds out SEARK College’s Fall Kickoff Events
An eclipse, a registration rush, an orientation, and a campus-wide party were all parts of SEARK’s Fall 2017 Kickoff. This year marks SEARK’s 58th year and a chance to welcome a new class of students from across Southeast Arkansas to the Pine Bluff campus.
According to Deb Pyland, Director of SEARK’s Advising and Retention Office, “The start of a new semester is an exciting time that marks students’ decision to invest in themselves and work to improve their life. We have a welcoming campus that celebrates and supports the students from application through graduation.” Pyland and her team collaborated with faculty and staff from across the campus to host this year’s “Back to School Bash.
The “Back to School Bash” built on an already busy student engagement calendar that began with New Student Orientation which provided students with an introduction to the SEARK Campus. The program provided student information on a diverse selection of topics including Financial Aid, Information Technology, Tutoring, the Career Pathways Initiative, the Trio Student Support Services program, Student Ambassadors, Phi Theta Kappa Honors Society, and the Barnes & Noble Bookstore, as well as, an introduction to the various offices located around campus. According to Barbara Dunn, Director of Recruitment, “This year we had a wonderful turnout and were able to provide new students a bridge to move from planning to go to college to actually being a college student.”
According to Scott Kuttenkuler, Vice President for Student Affairs, “The first couple of weeks are critical for student success. A student who is engaged and begins to form relationships with the campus as soon as possible is more likely to persist and to complete their degree.” Kuttenkuler also stated that “Our commitment to students is continuous and we look forward to watching them learn and succeed.”
