Southeast Arkansas College is opening its doors to the public for “Bring A Friend to SEARK Day” on Friday, October 5. Guests are encouraged to bring their friends and family members to SEARK campus, located at 1900 Hazel Street, any time between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. for campus tours, free treats, and a chance to win a college tuition waiver.

Deb Pyland, Director of Recruitment and Retention, said she wanted to create an event that would “allow our community to see firsthand all the great things happening at SEARK college.” Pyland also said she hopes that “Bring a Friend to SEARK Day” will give people who may be considering college the opportunity to explore campus, ask questions, and discover how easy it is to start earning a college degree. A long-time resident of Jefferson County, Pyland has organized and led student success initiatives at SEARK for the past 12 years, including a recently launched Career Closet that provides free professional clothing to SEARK students for job interviews.

The “Bring a Friend to SEARK Day” will feature a variety of activities as well as free shaved ice from Kona Ice. SEARK College will provide a $5 voucher to each registered guest to redeem towards their purchase from Blue Pig BBQ, who will be on site serving lunch items. Radio stations 99.3 The BEAT and 104.5 KTRN will broadcast live from the SEARK campus.

SEARK College will also have faculty and staff available to help with a variety of questions and services, including assistance with the admissions process and completion of the FAFSA application for financial aid, as well as providing information about SEARK’s technical and academic programs, degrees, and certificates. The college will also waive the Accuplacer fee for all registered attendees. Accuplacer testing will be available on the day of the event, or guests can use the waiver form—included with each registration packet—to complete the test at a later date. Registration will be held at the time of the event in front of the Welcome Center, located on the east side of campus off of Hazel Street.

SEARK staff will also be available to assist those interested in completing their high school equivalency exam, or GED.

Additionally, SEARK College will hold a drawing for free college tuition. Pyland stated that “individuals who apply for admission to SEARK at the event will be entered in a drawing for a 3-credit hour tuition waiver, a value of $288. The waiver can be used toward the Fall 2nd 8-week session which begins October 15, or towards the Spring 2019 semester, which will begin January 14th.”
