Course Description

(Prerequisite:  MATH 1013 Elementary Algebra or a score of 17-18 on the ACT placement test in mathematics or equivalent score on the ASSET, SAT, or COMPASS.)  Designed primarily for students not qualified to enroll directly into MATH 1333 College Algebra.  Fundamental operations of the real number system, factoring, linear equations, functions ands graphs, exponents, radicals and logarithms are covered.

Rationale

Intermediate Algebra is a course designed to continue building on the knowledge learned in Elementary Algebra to the level necessary for College Algebra.  It is also to better prepare those who do not first qualify for College Algebra.

General Course Goals

1.                   The student will be able to factor using several techniques.

2.                   The student will be able to use factoring to solve quadratic equations.

3.                   The student will be able to perform operations on rational expressions.

4.                   The student will be able to solve equations involving rational expressions.

5.                   The student will be able to solve application problems.

6.                   The student will be able to solve systems of equations.

7.                   The student will be able to solve equations containing radicals.

8.                   The student will be able to perform operations with radicals.

FACTORING - Chapter 8

Goals:     The student will be able to factor using several techniques.  The student will be able to use factoring techniques to solve quadratic equations.

 Objectives:          The student will be able to factor

1.                   Out a common factor.

2.                   A four-term expression by grouping.

3.                   Trinomials of the form X2 + BX + C.

4.                   Trinomials of the form AX2 + BX + C.

5.                   A perfect square trinomial.

6.                   The difference of two squares.

7.                   The sum or difference of two cubes.

8.                   To solve quadratic equations and applications.

RATIONAL EXPRESSIONS - Chapter 9

Goals:                     The student will be able to perform operations on rational expressions.  The student will be able to solve equations involving rational expressions.

 Objectives:          The student will be able to

1.                   Determine the values that make a rational expression undefined.

2.                   Build fractions.

3.                   Reduce (simplify) a rational in lowest terms.

4.                   Multiply and divide rational expressions.

5.                   Add and subtract rational expressions.

6.                   Simplify a complex fraction using one of two methods.

7.                   Solve equations that contain rational expressions.

8.                   Solve proportions and application problems.

Roots and Radicals - Chapter 10

Goals:       The student will be able to perform operations with radicals.  The student will be able to solve equations containing radicals.

 Objectives:         The student will be able to

1.                   Find the square of higher root of a number.

2.                   Classify the square root of a number and approximate it with a calculator.

3.                   Solve an application involving square roots.

4.                   Multiply and simplify radicals using the product rule.

5.                   Divide and simplify radicals using the quotient rule.

6.                   Simplify radicals involving variables.

7.                   Add and subtract like radicals.

8.                   Use the distributive property to simplify radicals.

9.                   Rationalize the denominator in an expression.

10.                Simplify a radical expression involving products, quotients, sums, or differences.

11.                Solve equations with square root terms.

Chapter 11 - Quadratic Equations

Goal:       The students will be able to solve and graph quadratic equations.

Objectives:           The students will be able to

                 1.               Solve Quadratic Equations by factoring and taking square roots.

2.                Solve quadratic equations by completing the square.

3.                Solve quadratic equations by using the quadratic formula.
