Emergency Medical Sciences - Basic
Emergency Medical Sciences (EMT) - Basic is an introductory survey of emergency medical services including medical legal/ ethical aspects, patient assessment, care of wounds and fractures, airway maintenance, patient transportation, medical and environmental emergency, childbirth, and extrication. The program prepares graduates for employment with ambulance services and in acute emergency facilities. Graduates are eligible to apply to take the examination for state and national certification as an EMT-B.

This program is closed to new applications.
Class size is limited; and all applicants are not accepted for participation.

Because of the nature of the profession it may not always be possible to accommodate students with severe disabilities.
Acceptance Procedures
Classes are held each semester. The selection process for admission is open through general registration and is based on first come, first enrolled until class capacity is reached. Only students who meet special admission requirements will be allowed to register. It is the students’ responsibility to submit all documents required for acceptance to the EMT Basic Program. Upon acceptance into the program students must submit evidence of the following in order to begin classes:
- Signed Functional Ability Acknowledgement Form.
- Hepatitis B Series or Signature on SEARK Vaccination Waiver Claim Form.
- Drug Screen.
- Criminal Background check.
- P.P.D. Skin Test or Chest X-Ray.
Students enrolled in Allied Health programs with a clinical component will be assessed a fee for malpractice insurance.
NOTE: Random drug screening may be utilized at any time during the course of the program at the students’ expense.
Advising
Counselors and faculty advisors are available to aid students in course selection and future planning.
Admission Requirements
- High School (or GED Equivalency) Diploma plus general and special requirements listed below:
- Completion of all general admissions procedures of the College.
- CPR certification (AHA—Health Care Provider or American Red Cross—Professional Rescuer). Certification must be valid for entire period of enrollment.
- Provide one or all of the following test scores:
- Accuplacer Reading score of at least 75
- Next Generation Accuplacer Reading score of at least 250 ACT Reading score of at least 19
- COMPASS Reading score of at least 83, OR
- Completion of a course in developmental reading with a letter grade of C or better.
- Completion of the Nursing and Allied Health Application for Admission form.
Financial Aid
For students who qualify, financial aid consists of funds made available from federal, state, and local sources. Scholarships, grants, loans, and Veteran's benefits are all available to qualified students.
Accreditation
Southeast Arkansas College is accredited by (CoEMSPA) Committee on Accreditation of Educational Programs for the Emergency Medical Services Professions, the Higher Learning Commission and is approved by the Arkansas Department of Health Division of EMS and Trauma Systems.
